about iceland
It has been stated that Iceland has a mysterious aura surrounding him on more than one occasion (volume two simple character introduction; volume four from Estonia's point of view.) In some cases, such a statement may be considered true. There has been no given explanation as to the expressions he makes of that usually being worked up and bothered. It comes to an even stranger point where he has something against smiling. While reasoning is kept in the dark, Iceland's mindset may offer some assistance to understanding.
He is the youngest of the Nordics, being a teenager. His neighbours as well as the people he is shown to be with, however, are fully fledged adults. While Iceland deems himself to be the sane man of the Nordic group there is a possibility that he wants to be thought of an adult as well. In the Wordy Nordic Comic it is brought up to where he feels everyone should act as an adult and yet he is merely teased about how he was as a mere child. However, when Christmas of 2011 rolls around and Ladonia refers to Iceland being on the older side (with Iceland protesting) as well as the year previous where Iceland calls Turkey 'pops' it gives away to the bit of immaturity he holds.
The matter of his temper contributes to the contradiction of his desired attitude. While he prefers to be reasonable and calm as possible, he easily gets agitated. If something is not dismissed or continues to be a bother to him he comes to a point where he gets flustered and trying to find a way out of the conversation or situation. It is a common happening when he is with the Nordic group where he is unable to find a decent rebuttal, contributing to the possibility of lack of wit, and decides on abandoning them. However, he tries to hold down his temper and easily embarrassed attributes when interacting with others. This includes during the Halloween party of 2011 when Hong Kong teases him over the matter of missing England's presence.
Iceland has a problem with being misunderstood. He prefers to speak English as clearly as possible to make communication go smoothly. It may be out of selfishness or careless as he offers the other side of the conversation to give themselves a chance to make clarity. If he is unable to make sense of something, it is disregarded as something that is meant to trick him or foolishness. However, even when he does understand it is a matter of his interest of acknowledging it. During April of 2011, Denmark makes mention of a flying cow that Iceland ignores even though there is a possibility that he is aware. That may simply be the one instance of wit Iceland simply has to offer.
He's not the worst guy on the planet. Despite the standoffish behaviour he chooses to see to the protection of Turkey during Christmas of 2010 despite having no previous interactions with him. There is also the matter of his DNA test which he did not keep a secret and actually chose to share with his fellow Nordics. But such 'kindness' only is jumbled up in how much of a push over he ends up being. A good amount of time is spent with the Nordics while foolish unfolds, whether it be their Halloween costumes or whatever club at school, and he seems to merely go along to complete the set. There is an implication of nagging or pressure from the Nordics in the comic in which Iceland reveals the DNA results to have Iceland address Norway as 'brother.' He does give in at some point and his complaints made during different appearances may suggest that he gives into the nagging for other purposes. As of lately, however, he floats away from the group and acts as his own self which may actually contribute to the maturity thing mentioned earlier.
It has been said that Iceland holds a respect for Norway and there is home for him there. However, interactions between the two have not occurred too often to validate this.In this instance we may simply have to take Himaruya's word for it. The subject that is typically brought up is the matter of their brotherly relationship that has been proved by a blood test. Norway has encouraged Iceland to call him by big brother in all versions of the Wordy Nordic Comic with Iceland always objecting and wanting to be treated as an adult. In the drama CD Norway has even told Iceland to call him big sister which may imply that most of it is all done to tease Iceland even though that song was really crappy. Despite being the one to reveal that they are brothers, this matter continues to bother Iceland.
He is basically a burrito of contradictions and teenage moodiness.
